Best treks in Africa

Africa is not only popular for its famous wildlife safaris, but also provides best trekking and hiking opportunities to adventure junkies. These treks will help you explore various regions in that area and help to get closer to nature. Some popular trekking destinations are listed below-

Mount Kilimanjaro- Mount Kilimanjaro tops the list of trekking destinations in Africa. It is the highest peak in Africa. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a great challenge and takes around 7-10 days. Various routes which you can take are Machame, Shira and Limosho and the easiest route is Marangu route. The best time for trekking is January- March and September-October.

Mount Kenya- It is the second highest peak in Africa and has two main peaks- Batian and Nelion. The third highest peak is point Lenana, which is famous among travelers.  You don’t need any technical skills to climb this peak but you need to be physically fit.  The best time for trekking is the dry seasons January- February and July-October. Climbing routes are Naro moru, Sirimon, Chogoria.

Atlas Mountains, Morocco- High Atlas Mountains of Morocco are popular trekking destinations among travelers. The Atlas is divided into Mid, High and anti Atlas Mountains. Out of these, High Atlas attracts maximum tourists who wish to climb Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The High Atlas Mountains can be trekked all year but spring is the best season for trekking.

Drakensberg, South Africa- The Drakenberg is the highest mountain range in South Africa. The highest peaks in the range are Thabana Ntlenyana in Lesotho and Mafadi in South Africa. These ranges consist of the Tugela falls, which is the second highest waterfall in the world. The Sentinal is the highest peak in Northern Drakensberg and a well organized trek can be completed in a day.

Mount Meru, Tanzania- Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania. It is not an active volcano and is only 50 miles apart from Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru trekking will take approximately 3-5 days and the best time to trek is June – October and December – February. Mount Meru Momella Route is the official route to the summit.

Simien Mountains, Ethiopia- The Simien are vast and beautiful mountain ranges in Ethiopia. The highest peak is Ras Dashen which is the fourth highest mountain in Africa. The Simien National Park is a declared World Heritage Site and is home to some endemic wildlife species which includes Gelada Baboon and Walia Ibex.
