Festival in the Desert, Mali

The Festival in the desert is a festival of art and culture held annually in Essakane, Mali. It is a celebration of Tuareg culture that showcases the traditional Tuareg music. The event involves traditional celebration and gathering of nomadic Tuareg people and the festivities include traditional Tuareg music, dancing, singing, poetry, camel races etc.

Mali is a country in Western Africa. Essakane is approximately 65kms north of the city of Timbuktu and is the site for the annual festival in the desert. African Masks

African masks are an essential feature of the traditional culture of African people. These masks are usually worn during social and religious events, crop harvesting, war preparation and funeral ceremonies. Masks are unique to different African societies and have different meaning for different cultures.

Most abundant type of masks among African cultures is the carved animal mask. Some commonly carved animal masks are of crocodile, hawk, buffalo and hyena.
