Tribes of Africa
The African continent has a variety of different tribes living across throughout the continent. The culture of the people varies from tribe to tribe.
Tribes of Nigeria-
Major Nigerian tribes are Hausa Fulani, Yoruba and the Ibo. Hausa Fulani people live in the northern parts of the country and follow Islam. Ibo is the second largest Nigerian tribe and these people live in southwestern parts of the country.
Tribe of South Africa-
Zulus are the best known tribal groups in South Africa. The Zulus believe in a creator God , Nkulunkulu. Their official language is Zulu. Modern Zulu population is distributed evenly in the urban and rural areas. Zulus in Zambia are known as Abangoni and in Zimbabwe they are known as Amandebele.
Tribes of Kenya-
Maasai people are among the well known ethnic groups in Africa, living in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Maasai lead a semi-nomadic life and a traditional Maasai dress consists of red sheets wrapped around the body and beaded jewelry is worn around the neck and arm.
Based on language, there are 3 different tribes in Kenya- Bantu-speaking tribes, Nilotic-speaking tribes and the Cushitic-speaking tribes.
Tribes of Mali-
Some of the prominent Mali tribes include the Dogon, Barbara, Fulani, Bobo, Bozo and Tuareg.
Dogons are located in Bandiagara district and their main festival is the Fete des Masques which is held in April. The Tuaregs are nomadic people from the Sahara. They are the founders of Timbuktu city. Tuaregs are followers of Islam.
Tribes of Ghana-
Like other African nations, Ghana comprises of many tribal groups. These include Ashanti, Ewe, Mole-Dagbani, Gurma and Guan.
The Ashanti is the largest tribe in Ghana. This tribe is very famous for their craft work. The Ewe live in the southeastern parts of Ghana and mostly include farmers.
